… and it all started with a $10,000.00 template.
Ingenuity Media exists because of one phone call. In 2015, someone close to our founder, David Snyder, asked him to look over a brand-new website, one he'd paid a design agency more than $10,000 to build over three months.
David knew the work. He'd been building with WordPress since 2008, back when he ran his first company, an SEO agency in Minneapolis. So he recognized exactly what he was looking at: a template. The very same template he himself had used on a project a year earlier, lightly reskinned and sold as custom.
It wasn't a one-off. Digging through agency portfolios across Central Pennsylvania, he found that more than 60% of the "custom-made" websites being sold were modified templates, passed off as original work, at original-work prices.
So in August 2016, David sold his SEO agency to his employees and founded Ingenuity Media LLC on a different promise: real work at a fair price. He was upfront that he used templates, and he charged a fraction of what his competitors did, asking only fair wages for the time a project actually took.
That upfront, template-based model carried Ingenuity Media for years. Today it's a thing of the past: every website is now designed entirely from scratch, with no templates involved at all: the same promise, without the compromise.
David Snyder starts building with WordPress while running Ingenuity Content Creation, an SEO agency based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Asked to review a friend's expensive new website, David recognizes it instantly as a reskinned template, and finds the same story across local agency portfolios.
David sells his SEO agency to his employees and launches Ingenuity Media LLC in Central PA, upfront about his process and priced fairly for the time each project truly takes.
With sharper tools and a deeper skill set, Ingenuity Media branches into Managed WordPress Hosting and website design offered on a SaaS basis.
COVID-19 forces an early end to the SaaS model, and Ingenuity returns to its proven approach. In March 2023, the studio reinvests in its hosting infrastructure and begins expanding beyond Central Pennsylvania.
What begins as a #ThankfulTyrone campaign, set on proving the "there's nothing here" line to be a lie, quickly outgrows its name. First it's Hub of the Highways, focused on northern Blair County; then Discover Blair County; and finally it settles across our whole service area as Discover Central PA.
Marking its 10th anniversary, Ingenuity Media now designs 100% unique websites from scratch, using modern AI tools to deliver truly custom WordPress sites, still at fair, accessible rates. Today our clients reach from Florida to California, Texas to South Dakota, and everywhere in between.
The concept we pioneered in 2019 comes back, rebuilt for a new decade: the relaunch of website design on a SaaS basis. Details soon.
Our ongoing giveback project
Since 2024 we've hosted Discover Central PA, giving back to our neighbors by celebrating the region's people, places, food, and stories through interviews with local servant leaders, food reviews, business highlights, and live streams of community events.
The podcast and new episodes run September through May. Summers are for family. That rhythm is the whole point: serve the community during the school year, and be fully present with our kids when they're home.
