Search engine optimization — SEO — has a reputation for being mysterious, technical, or even a little shady. It is none of those things. At its core, SEO is simply the work of making it easy for Google to understand your website and confident enough to recommend it. Here is how it actually works, in plain English.
How search engines work
Google does three things: it crawls the web to discover pages, indexes those pages so it can store what they are about, and ranks them when someone searches. Your job is to make all three easy.
Step 1: Know what your customers actually search
SEO starts with words — the real phrases people type when they need what you offer. “Emergency plumber near me” is very different from “how plumbing works.” Focus on the phrases that signal someone is ready to act, not just browse.
Step 2: Get the basics right on every page
Each page needs a clear, descriptive title tag, a concise meta description, and a single main heading. These tell Google — and the searcher — what the page is about. Vague or duplicate titles are a common and easily fixed mistake.
Step 3: Be fast and mobile-friendly
Google ranks the mobile version of your site, and it factors in speed. A site that is slow or awkward on a phone will struggle no matter how good the content is.
Step 4: Create content that answers real questions
Every question your customers ask is a page you could rank for. Helpful, genuine content — guides, answers, explanations — is what earns long-term visibility.
Step 5: Build local signals
For most small businesses, local SEO matters most. Keep your business name, address, and phone number identical everywhere online, claim your Google Business Profile, and encourage honest reviews.
Step 6: Measure what matters
Ignore vanity metrics. Watch the numbers tied to your business: how many people find you through search, and how many of them go on to contact you.
A note on expectations
SEO is not instant. It is a compounding investment that builds over months. Anyone promising a number-one ranking next week is selling something else.
